Linking Utah's Innovation Community

Success stories

USTAR has been instrumental in bringing together people from all walks of life to help Utah companies find success. Some recent accomplishments:

USTAR has successfully hired more than 20 all-star researchers. This represents active research underway in different teams in the areas of energy, biomedical technology, brain medicine, imaging technology, and nanotechnology.

The USTAR building projects are on track, with both the University of Utah and Utah State University facilities completing the programming phase. The design phase is now underway for both, and groundbreaking in Logan took place October 2008. The USU building is projected to open in 2011, and the U of U facility in 2012.

The USTAR Technology Outreach and Innovation Program (TOIP) teams are in place regionally and pursuing active consulting engagements with dozens of companies and entrepreneurs statewide. As of Dec. 2008, the TOIP teams (based on Weber State University, USU - Vernal, UVU, SUU and Dixie State College) have provided material support to more than 240 clients and companies and have ongoing projects with dozens more. TOIP teams were instrumental in helping several clients obtain more than $17 million in private equity funding. In addition, regional directors have spearheaded the creation of two new angel investment groups (Dixie, Park City) and are providing administrative support to several others.

The Northern Utah outreach center successfully organized "Concept to Company", a competition geared towards innovations in the outdoor industry. As a result of that competition 120 business ideas where submitted. For more information on Concept to Company please click here

The Central Utah outreach office has spearheaded the creation of Utah's Digital Media Alliance, and the Southern Utah office has analyzed Utah's alternative energy assets. The Northern Utah office has helped Weber State University launch a Technology Commercialization Office, and the Eastern Utah office has a number of fossil energy projects that promise significant gains for the state.
