Linking Utah's Innovation Community

Robert Barson is the executive director of the Center for Active Sensing and Imaging (CASI) at Utah State University. He and the center are engaged in development of technology using directed energy, primarily lasers, for remote sensing and imaging of terrestrial hard targets, such as buildings and terrain, and atmospheric soft targets, like aerosols and particles. The technology applies to a wide range of markets such as land development, architectural surveys, mining, utility corridor survey and mapping, real-world 3D imaging for games and films, environmental remote sensing and monitoring, wind profiling including wind farm siting, and commercial and military intelligence gathering. Prior to joining CASI, Mr. Barson played a key role in establishing today’s large-scale electronic video display industry. As an electronics design engineer with multiple patents and as vice president of engineering for several world-renowned display industry companies, he personally planned and designed many of the industry’s innovative software and LED video display products currently in use worldwide. He is the president and principal engineer of Visualtec Imaging, LLC, consulting on imaging and display solutions.
