Linking Utah's Innovation Community

USTAR's ARRA Funding

Through Senate Bill 240 passed by the State Legislature in March 2009, USTAR is deploying $33 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) to be used over fiscal years FY2010 and FY2011.  The funding comes through Title XIV – State Fiscal Stabilization Fund – of ARRA.

Of the $33 million, USTAR will use $23 million over two years on new and existing research teams at the University of Utah and Utah State University within five innovation areas.  This is in addition to $27 million from state funding for those same two years.  The five innovation areas include the following:

These innovation areas encompass more than two dozen projects, all focused on breakthroughs in billion-dollar markets. USTAR teams are tackling the big problems: Energy independence, climate change, early detection and treatment of cancer, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and neurological disorders. USTAR teams are also tackling the big markets in digital media and environmental/industrial applications. The ultimate goal is to commercialize research breakthroughs, create new companies and jobs, and bring new products and services to market, building Utah’s tax base.

In addition to the $23 million devoted to research, the ARRA funding is being deployed as follows:
